Fares are legibly indicated above the ticket vending machines, although they are often written only in Chinese characters.
If you can't read Chinese characters
Check your fare in advance, or confirm with a station employee.
「JREast InfoLine」 (Telephone assistance services in English, Korean and Chinese)

If you can read Chinese characters
Look up fares on the board at the station, or go online and use a search site.

Fares for Adults and Children

Rail fares are categorized as follows.
Category Age Rail Fare
大人(Adult) 12and older 100%
こども(Child) 6 to 11 50%(half fare) 
Fares need to be rounded off to the nearest ten.

In the following case, a passenger is charged 100% the adult fare. 
When a passenger travels in the first-class Green Car.

幼児(Toddler) 1 to 5 Free
(Up to two toddlers ride free if accompanied by a paying adult or child passenger.)

In the following cases, a passenger is charged 50% the adult fare.
The third and subsequent toddlers must pay half the adult fare if accompanied by a paying adult or child passenger.
When a toddler passenger travels alone.
When a infant/toddler passenger occupies a reserved or a Green Car seat.

乳児(Infant) Under 1 Free
 In the following case, a passenger is charged 50% the adult fare.  
When a infant/toddler passenger occupies a reserved or a Green Car seat.

特急TokkyuLimited Express)・グリーン車Green-CarFirst-class Car

When you travel in Limited Express(特急), you have to pay additional charges.
Some trains include first-class Green Cars(グリーン車), such as Rapid Sobu Line.
When you get on a Green Car, you have to purchase an upgrade.
Green Cars are marked with a green leaf-like sign.
